After about a 5 year hiatus, 161andRiver, the website based on the largest group of Yankees fans ever on Facebook (well, the largest group 5+ years ago, but still, it was pretty impressive). With this morning’s arrival of pitchers and catchers, Spring Training 2013 is in full effect. There should be plenty of intrigue surrounding the Yankees this Spring, and the World Baseball Classic makes for another wrench in what has been, in other seasons, a fairly boring time of the year.
Here are the main story lines that you should follow:
Great story by the NY Daily News. Personally, I was not aware of this, and it certainly makes you root for Austin a little bit more. Austin has a pretty far outside chance of playing with the MLB club this season, and I only say that because the Yankees are so thin at 3B – if Youkilis goes down with an injury, all bets are off as to what they will do. He will get some reps in Spring Training and should be interesting to watch. In 2012, he started the year playing rookie ball, and ended with AA Trenton. Anytime you shoot up the system that quickly, you know you’re having a good season. Austin finished with a .322 BA, .400 OBP, .559 SLG, 17 HR, 80 RBI, 23 SB, over 110 games across multiple levels.
